Prince Rupert’s pickleball community served fierce rallies and local pride at the 2nd Annual ‘Fun-A-Ment’ on April 5.
The day was an overwhelming success, with more than 75 players, 60-plus cheering fans, nearly 100 matches, and a full nine hours of continuous pickleball at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.
“It was a celebration of teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of play,” said Prince Rupert Pickleball Community Group, the tournament host.
Players from Terrace, Kitimat, Masset and Vancouver also joined the competition.
“Their presence reminded us that pickleball’s reach is growing beyond city lines, and their participation added a wonderful spirit of regional connection,” said the pickleball group.
This year, to welcome its newest players, a Beginner category was introduced to the competition. Many participants had just picked up a paddle for the first time a few weeks prior.
Due to the efforts of volunteers such as Steve Bomben, Chantelle Vera, Phat Amy, and Modesto Dosreis, more than 30 beginners received preparatory lessons, with 16 eager players participating in their first official matches.
“Their enthusiasm was contagious, and their progress was inspiring,” said the Prince Rupert Pickleball Community group.
Leona Truong and Tony Duong secured first place, while Christy Paquet and Corinne Bomben took second. Kirsten Prevost and Ben McCallum finished third.
The Intermediate Category showcased 24 dynamic teams.
“These players have not only improved their skills but have also represented Prince Rupert in tournaments across the region. Whether they arrived with a longtime partner or were matched up to ensure inclusivity, all teams gave it their best during round robin play and the exciting playoff rounds,” said the host group.
Thai Pham and Julian Callangan prevailed with the first prize in the Intermediate bracket, while Amy Dopson and Phat Tran secured second place. Brayden Ferguson and Paul Svendsen rounded out the podium in third.
In January 2023, a group of friends with paddles in Rupert decided to try out a new sport, and it has since evolved into a flourishing movement. Today, over 500 members have joined the Prince Rupert Pickleball Facebook page, which continues to welcome new participants each week.
“It’s been a beautiful reminder of how connection, laughter, and shared passion can bring people together.”
As the weather warms up, the group will move outdoors and play at the McBride Courts. Their weekly indoor sessions continue at the Civic Centre Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on weekends from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The group invites individuals of all proficiencies to stop by and join the play.
“We believe Pickleball is more than just a sport—it’s a way to connect, stay active, and build friendships across generations,” said the Pickleball Community group.
The event was planned by Tess Szostakiwskyj, Phat Amy, Chantelle Vera, Brayden Ferguson, David Tran, Christy Paquet, Modesto Dosreis, Gwen MacDonald, Luciette Cunha, Steve Bomben, and others. It received sponsorship from LeBlanc Wealth Management, Thai Pham – Realty Executives, Dr. Douglas A. Lindley and Hashmark Photography & Film.
