The Prince George Thunder are the first champions of the Northwest B.C. Boundary Bash cricket tournament.

Just in its second season, the new cricket ground in Thornhill is being put to great use for the first time hosting a team from outside the region.

The Boundary Bash brought together a select team of northwest players (Northwest Eagles), the Prince George Thunder and the Prince Rupert Raptors in a weekend tournament played June 28 and 29.

“What a thrilling weekend filled with amazing sportsmanship,” said Kam Siemens, president of the Northwest BC Cricket Association.

Saturday saw the three teams battle it out on the pitch, each playing the other two others. Siemens said the play was stiffly competitive, but in the end Prince George and the NWBC Select team made it through to the final on Sunday.

The final was a close match, but Prince George came out on top.

Harbir Singh (PG Thunders) was named tournament MVP, while best batter honours went to teammate Diamond. The best bowler was Sukchain from the Eagles. Best fielder honours went to the Raptors’ Yadwinder.

While it was not the Raptors’ weekend overall, the team currently stands atop the Northwest in league play with five wins in six matches. The Thornhill Thunders are in second place with three wins in seven matches. The Kitimat Super Kings, also with seven matches played, have two wins to round out the table.

“We started the tournament with a land acknowledgement from newly re-elected [Kitselas First Nation] Chief Glenn Bennett,” said Siemens. “We feel the importance of understanding and paying tribute to our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Our athletes felt to truly honour and pay our respect, we chose to wear orange jerseys in solidarity of National Indigenous History Month.”

Meanwhile, the Raptors are making steady progress readying their new ground in Port Edward for tournament play.

They are currently using the pitch for practices and friendly matches. No tournaments have yet been scheduled, but the hope is, they will soon be hosting league play.
